About the Situation on the Russian Labor Market in 2011

In 2011, the number of the economically active population in Russia amounted to 75.7m people of which 70.7m were gainfully employed, while 5.0, unemployed (according to the ILO's methods).
In 2011, the level of employment amounted to 63.8% and exceeded by 1.1 % the index of the pervious year with a decrease in the level of unemployment by 0.9% to 6.6% as compared to 2010.

As of the end of 2011, the total number of the unemployed exceeded by 3.6 times the number of the unemployed registered with public institutions of the employment service where 1,286,000 people were registered as unemployed. In November 2011, the tension coefficient (the number of the unemployed registered with public institutions of the employment service as per 100 job vacancies) fell from 175.9 to 111.6 as compared to January 2011. It is to be noted that in October-November 2011 weakening of the dynamics of the demand in the work force was observed.

It is to be noted that in the 2000-2011 period the change in the demand in the work force was determined by a shift of employment to those types of activities which specialize in rendering of services. In the past few years, a decrease in employment was registered almost in all the types of activities in industry with the most intense drop in employment observed in manufacturing. Formation of that trend took place in a situation of weakening of the dynamics of the labor efficiency.
