Meeting of scientific council of Gaidar Institute dedicated to the topic of trade wars, actual for the world modern economy, took place on September 26.
Alexander Knobel, Candidate of economic sciences, Head of International trade department, delivered major presentation "Trade wars in the context of modern trends of globalization”. In the beginning of his presentation, he pointed out that balance of power in the world economy has undergone significant changes in the recent two/three decades.
Expert spoke in detail about structural changes in global distribution of resources that took place in recent decades. Firstly, growth of developing economies turned out to be higher than similar indicators for developed countries and this tendency may continue in coming years.
Secondly, proportion of developed countries in the world GDP is less than similar indicator for developing countries, nevertheless, there is a significant gap maintained between the levels of economic development.
Thirdly, inequality in the distribution of disposable incomes is growing in developed as well as in developing countries exacerbated by development of digital economy and existence of digital gap.
Fourthly, a proficit of developing countries takes place in the trade of commodities and services. Similar tendencies appear in the sphere of investment cooperation.
Fifthly, one may speak on the growth of external added value in gross export as part of development of added value chain, in other words, growth of interdependence of economies is especially significant for economies of developing countries.
Speaker also presented the state of modern international trade by the numbers, tackled principal trade barriers, spoke on goals of trade wars and assessed their consequences for main participants and world economy in general.

Dmitry Kuznetsov, Researcher of International trade department of the Gaidar Institute, delivered a supplementary presentation "Temporary shortfalls of commodities transportation as a barrier in the international trade. He spoke mainly on mechanisms of time influence on trade and analysis of losses of Russian customers due to queues and delays in fulfilling formalities related to commodities at multiway automobile crossing points.
