GAIDAR INSTITUTE IS 30 YEARS OLD
“Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy” (Gaidar Institute) Foundation is a leading Russian non-governmental research and academic center.
It was founded by Yegor Gaidar in 1990 as the Institute for Economic Policy (IEP) of the Academy of National Economy and the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1992, it was renamed to the Institute for Economic Problems of the Transition Period (IEPTP), and in January 1999, as the Institute for the Economy in Transition (IET).
Yegor Gaidar was the Institute’s unchallenged leader until December 2009. In 2010, in accordance with the initiative of the IET team and pursuant to Executive Order No.601 of May 14, 2010 of the RF President the Institute received the new name: Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy (Gaidar Institute).
For thirty years, Gaidar Institute has been supporting intellectually the transformation of the Russian economy and society; it is one of the most respected think-tanks, which forms the culture of economic thought in Russia.
Gaidar Institute employs around 140 researchers, including one full member of the RAS, 10 doctors of science and 39 candidates of science.
Gaidar Institute carries out research in five main areas: macroeconomics and finance; real sector; institutional development, ownership and corporate governance; political economy and regional development; legal studies.
Gaidar Institute’s experts participated in intellectual support of the liberal reforms of the 1990s,
development of the RF Tax Code, the Gref Program, the 2020 Strategy, the Kudrin Program (CSR) and other documents.
Gaidar Institute established international departments headed by world renowned economists: Larry Kotlikoff, Professor of the Boston University, Andrei Simonov, Professor of the Michigan State University and Cristopher Davis, Professor of the Oxford University.
Gaidar Institute’s activities focus on research in the fields of economic, judicial and social sciences and law, organization and financing of research projects in the specified areas, including joint projects with foreign and international scientific, academic, economic and financial institutions.
As per the University of Pennsylvania’s rating of research centers, the Gaidar Institute is rated the 32nd in the region of Central and Eastern Europe, while in accordance with the IDEAS RePEc rating, it is assigned the 23rd place among the world’s leading analytical centers in the field of economic research registered with RePEc and is one of Russia’s best analytical centers.
Gaidar Institute has held on a regular basis Gaidar Readings – workshop conferences on the most topical social and economic issues of Russian regions’ development and the international cooperation – in Moscow, Russian regions, as well as abroad since 2010. Up to now, the Gaidar Institute has held 30 readings.
Gaidar Institute offers a post-graduate course. The United Dissertation Council of the Gaidar Institute and the Presidential Academy holds the defense of theses on three economic specialties: “The Economic Theory”, “The Economics and National Economy Administration” and “Finance, Money Supply and Lending.”
In 2010, the Gaidar Institute Publishing House was established. It publishes the “Scientific Works” series (over 180 works), annual surveys “The Russian Economy. Trends and Outlooks”, the 15-volume collection of works by Yegor Gaidar, Russian and foreign research in economics and social and liberal sciences and treatises by classics and modern authors (around 25 books annually). The Gaidar Institute is the founder of periodicals “Russia’s Economic Development”, “The Economic Policy”, the “Monitoring of Economic Situation in Russia” Bulletin, the “Gaidar IEP.ru Scientific Bulletin” e-magazine, the English-language economic magazine “Russian Journal of Economics”, the “Logos” philosophical journal and the “VestniK Evropy” literary journal.
