Tatyana Ivakhnenko on inequality in Russia

Tatyana Ivakhnenko, researcher at the Mathematical Modeling of Economic Processes Department at the Gaidar Institute, confirmed to RBC that during crises the degree of inequality in income distribution decreases.

«We are talking primarily about a reduction in the income of business owners. Periods of recession are accompanied by bankruptcy and closure of enterprises, reduced business activity and other negative consequences that limit the ability of the most affluent segments of the population to raise their well-being," she explained. Meanwhile, the government strengthens support for the least well-off strata, as a result of which the income divide can narrow.

The tight monetary policy among others could have created preconditions for the growth of income inequality in 2024 says Tatyana Ivakhnenko. The high key rate, in her opinion, provided an opportunity for the wealthiest strata to receive additional low-risk income through deposits and increased rent revenues.
